The first word that came across my mind when I heard the word Social Engagement is boring, but little did I know that it was one of the best experience I had in my university life. Social Engagement is a university course which all second and third year students from electrical engineering needs to take for this semester. My group and I was given the chance to be a mentor for a project named Beyond Engineering (BEGIN) 2019. We were given one school to help them building their prototype before the competition day. The school that we were mentoring is Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tropicana which was located at Petaling Jaya. The project that they were creating is Smart Fencing.

Day 1: Briefing Day
The first day was the briefing day, all of us are required to lead them through a lab tour. The labs are located at Engineering tower, block L and block C. The students from all the schools participated were given the chance to go through the lab and have a few QnA session with the person in charge in the lab. We had so little time but so many things to learn in the lab and unfortunately the lab tour session had to end early because the students need to go back home.

Day 2: First visit to SMK Tropicana
I was so excited to go to the school to help them with their prototype. We assembled at 1.45 p.m. so that we can arrived at the school on 2 p.m.. In terms of transportation, we had our personal vehicles to go there. Safely arrived at the school, we were greeted by our mentee and their teacher, Madam Khor. We had a small ice breaking session and we start our programs as soon as possible. I was helping my groupmates about the Arduino, and I was hopeless, as I had zero knowledge about Arduino. So I decided to help others on the circuit and housing of the prototype. Luckily, Dr. David did helps us on a few things so that we can finished the prototype sooner.

Day 3: Second visit to SMK Tropicana
Having trouble about Arduino and the programming during the last visits, our mentor, Dr. Suhana which is a lecturer from Civil Engineering department, brought along her student whom is professional in Arduino to help us completing the programming and Arduino stuff. Meanwhile, we were helping them on the housing of the prototype and their presentation skills. Lucky enough that the students from the school managed to complete the prototype before everyone left on that day.

Day 4: Competition Day
Competition day was held at parking lot block C. There were so many booth with so many invention from competing schools. At 9 a.m. we went and met with SMK Tropicana students and let them brief us with their invention first so that we know that they are fully prepared to explained it to the judges. During the judging, all of us were praying that everything went well. Judging finished then we all need to wait until 1 p.m. for the results. We exchange stories while waiting for the result. Closing ceremony as well as results announcement on 1 p.m., we all nervously waited for the results and fortunately SMK Tropicana were placed 1st runner-up and we were overjoyed. All the hard work paid off. We had our group photo session and then we exchanged Thank yous and Goodbyes, and we wish all the best for upcoming innovation competition. Many things were learnt during Social Engagement, which I thought that it will be pain, but I was wrong. Meeting them was a great things which reminds me of my time during participating in a few innovation competitions during my school life. After meeting them, I decided to actively participate in a project either from college or from the faculty.

Sincerely,
