For social engagement, we are from electrical department, faculty of engineering chose to be a part of the Beyond Engineering Innovation Challenge (Begin Challenge 2019) and were assigned to be a mentor for SMK Tropicana. Since the organizer is looking for innovation based on futuristic operation of estate and optimization of estate efficiency, they come out with their prototype called Smart Plantation Fencing (SPF) aiming to reduce and prevent animal intrusion to plantation.
Day-1
On the opening day, we were assigned to lead the students to a lab tour around the engineering tower, faculty of engineering. The students that are comes from different schools might gain some inspirations or idea from this lab tour to produce their prototype. I felt satisfied seeing them so eager by asking so many questions to the person in charge in the lab.
Day-2
We went to SMK Tropicana for the first time to help them with their prototype. We met their teacher Madam Khor and the students. After a short ice breaking session,me and my team divided our tasks to teach them on how to glue the parts using chloroform, help them with the circuits and the programming part. We also get some help from our lecturer,Dr David. I can see that the students are very excited when our members teach them on how to use the chloroform and they are eager to try it by themselves. I am fascinate that they are able to do it by themselves after a short demo given by our members. Some of our members checked their circuit and the coding to identify the problems. Explanation and suggestion had been given in order to improvise their prototype.
Day-3
For the second trips to the SMK Tropicana, we continue with the unsettling part. Some of our members help the students with the coding part and others help them with the presentation skills. We gave them some knowledge and tips on how to present well, the way to convey the ideas and so on.
We also received some help and guidance from Dr. Suhana Bt Koting, senior lecturer from Department of Civil Engineering and Mr. Jahangir, postgraduate students from Faculty of Engineering in University of Malaya. Mr. Jahangir helps us a lot on the coding part.
Day-4
The competition day has come, this is the time where they can finally show their hard work all this while. The students accompanied by Madam Khor arrived at Block C, faculty of engineering at 8.00 am and do some preparation and setting up their booth. Luckily, the prototype is completely done and functions well. We went there to give some motivation but I can see that they are obviously felt nervous and so do i. We calmed them and gave support so that they felt better and can present well to the judges.
During the evaluation session, we are unable to be there since we have class at that time. But we pray for them and hopes that all is well. After a few hours waiting, SMK Tropicana announced as second place winner. We are so proud and happy for them as all the hard work is finally paid of.
What i have learned from the students is that they are always supporting each other because their bond is very strong. Whatever problems that comes, they overcome it together as a group and never gives up. This really open my eyes the importance of cooperation in groups that finally makes them success. I am thankful to be a part of this team since i have learned many things from them and do hope to see them again.
Sincerely,
