As a student studying Electrical Engineering, we had the option to be a volunteer in the BEGIN Challenge. We were tasked to be mentors to a specific school which was SMK Tropicana. I as a Member of Social Engagment GROUP 14 group of 11 members, help the to complete their prototype which is a SMART FENCING FOR ANIMAL DETECTION.
With or knowledge of engineering we, helped them to complete this prototype for the competition.
Day 1
On the day of opening of begin we were given the task to lead a tour around Engineering Labs. Each of the group members were separated to respective location. were I was sent to the CEREF Lab separated from, my group members. It was actually very short notice but very tiring since it lasted the whole day. It felt like i was a bouncer of the lab, where i had to stand like a bodyguard of the lab and make sure every one behaved. it was really quite hectic but we did our best to do the lab tour. After the tour ended, we reported back to the president and the caretaker of BEGIN Challange. That was the end of day 1.
Day 2
We gathered at 2 pm in the afternoon to have our trip heading to our destination of the day. We arrived at the SMK Tropicana with excitement and ready to help our group in their task to complete the prototype. Without further ado, we quickly settled down at our respective tasks, for instance, programming, circuitry analysis, presentation slides and container fabrication which was my part. The container used acrylic board which was cut into pieces and for the forming and binding we used the ever known corrosive chloroform in few hours time it dries, in the meanwhile, a few of our group members showed their talents by programming and explaining how to present, to attract more crowd besides explaining to the judges. Dr David was out lecturer in charge who help us to with the circuitry. and made it work well.
Day 3
I was really tired by then due to the constant hard work and determination and wouldn't want to wake up on the competition day feeling unaccomplished. Anyhow, it's the last day of meeting before D-day and let's work hard together to make the Smart Fence a big success. We started arranging our task and picked up where we left off. Unexpectedly, some of the components of the prototype didn't work so Dr Suhana or lecturer in charge called a PhD student to help with the programming and the arduino. He made it work while we continue with the container and the powerpoint presentation. When we left, there was just tiny bit of tweaking and touch up left for the competition.
After those hard work, finally we were able to get the prototype to work well again, ! It was my personal experience that there was a boy named Andrew asked me to help him learn more about electrical and electronics, I told him to work hard to achieve his goals. The rest of it was up to got to go for the competition
Day 4
Finally the day arrived, the day of the competition of BEGIN Challenge , which is on 24th of April 2019 as the students from SMK Tropicana will be paying a visit to our university, University of Malaya. As usual, we were briefed about our respective job scopes the day before in order to be clear of the programme flow. All of us gathered at 9.00 am in the morning then proceed to Block C, Faculty of Engineering to have some preparation.
Approximately after an hour, we were informed that the student were ready for the competition. the judges arrives. The prototype of each school was judged one by one, and when our turn came we held our breaths, while it was judged. We had to wait till 1 pm for the results. Clock struct one and results were announced to our surprise we were placed second and we were overjoyed. All the hard work paid off. We ended the day with a group photo. After that we said our Thank yous and Goodbyes. We learn many things throughout the Social Engagment course. We happily concluded our Social Engagment and considered it a Great Great Success.
