A splendid moment spent with my social engagement team from Department of Electrical Engineering UM. For our social engagement activity, we decided to be a part of Beyond Engineering Innovation Challenge ( Begin Challenge 2019 ) as we were assigned to be a mentor for SMK Tropicana which was located at Petaling Jaya. Our social engagement team consists of 11 members all from second year students of Electrical Engineering UM and a mentor that was a lecturer from Department of Civil Engineering, Dr Suhana. Our task was to assist the school's team to improvise their idea on their project and prepare them with some soft skills that was needed during the competition day as they need to impress the judges with their presentation skills. The project that SMK Tropicana were working for was Smart Fencing.
Day 1
The first day of our task is the briefing day. We were required to accompany them for lab tour at Engineering Tower, Block L and Block C. The participants was given some exposure on some of the engineering facts that may give them some inspiration for their project design.
Day 2
The next day for our task was our first visit to SMK Tropicana which is located about 8 km from UM. We gathered in front of Engineering Tower at 1.45 p.m. and we arrived safely at the school around 2.00 p.m. We were greeted by Madam Khor, the teacher in charge for the innovation team of SMK Tropicana. We had some ice breaking session before dividing our work to supervise the students. There were Arduino programming, circuit connection and the housing of the prototype.
We spent valuable hours at the school tutoring and helping them on their project and for summary, all the things went better than we expected.
Day 3
The third day was our second visit to the school. This time, our workshop was joined by Mr Jahangir that was very familiar with Arduino coding. He helped to answer all the question about Arduino that we can't solve on the first visit. Next, we helped them to complete their project housing design and hone their presentation skills to prepare them for the competition day. We conduct some practice presentation to observe and fix their weakness on their presentation. We made some adjustments to finalize the project before we left the school.
The final day was the competition day. It was held at parking lot Block C. Approximately at 9.00 a.m. we went and met the innovation team from our respected school and they give us some short briefing about their project as a preparation for the competition. At first, there were some problems with the project prototype but the students was prepared and they take some time to troubleshoot and make the project work as desired. We were informed that there were three judges for this competition and after the judging phase was completed, we are required to wait for the result during the closing ceremony that starts at 1.00 p.m. Fortunately, all hard work paid off as SMK Tropicana were placed as 1st runner-up for this competition. In my opinion, they really deserved for this win as they worked really hard to complete their project. We were really proud of them and it was a great experience for us to become a mentor for this school. Thank you guys.
Sincerely,
