 Social engagement was slightly different for us. We as electrical engineering students were given the opportunity to be part of The Begin Challenge 2019. A competition between schools throughout the country , to build the most innovative invention among the rest. To mentor one of the schools were our tasked and luckily enough we were task to Mentor SMK Tropicana with their current prototype idea of SMART FENCING.

Day 1 - Officiating event for Begin Challenge 2019.
On the first day of our journey, we successfully manage to lead groups of students around the Engineering Tower, Block L which houses all of the research labs used by our lecturers and researchers. This is to create exposure to the students, incite their fascinations in engineering and maybe give them inspiration on their ground breaking ideas for The Begin Challenge.
The situation was very daunting as there were many students trying to get a hold of the labs and we have limited time to brief them about each lab. Thus, we had to cut short our briefing of each lab to compensate on the lack of time we had. 


Day 2 - The first Visit to SMK Tropicana
It was the first day! All of us gathered at the Engineering Tower at 2 pm to make our move to SMK Tropicana. In terms of commuting, we had our personal vehicles to commute us there. Around half an hour , we arrived in SMK Tropicana which we were greeted with our mentees and the school teacher , Puan Khor.  As soon as we arrived, we didn't waste any time. We immediately had an ice breaking session with the team and immediately delegated tasks among ourselves. I personally helped the team out with the programming of the Arduino and the implementation of their mobile app. Luckily, Dr David did gave us a helping hand on this , especially the circuitry and the circuit manage to work as intended.



Day 3- The Second and final visit to SMK Tropicana
Although it's only been two trips, i have somewhat familiarize myself with the school. Reminded me a lot with my old school back when i was a Secondary student. Anyways, the third day was just filled with a lot of questions regarding the programming. Our team decided to use Unity as a platform to make the mobile app and programming knowledge was essential. 

Later that day, Abu Bakar , a fellow team mate, and I volunteered to teach the team some presentation skills which is crucial in their endeavors to win the first prize for the Begin Challenge. Luckily enough, i was fresh from my presentation skills class and just finished my presentation about How a DSLR camera works. Thus, i manage to convey all what i have learned in class to them. Hopefully, the info i passed on would prove useful on the competition day itself which is not too far from now. 



Day 4 - The Begin Challenge Begins. (Pun intended)
The day has come for the team to prove themselves , their invention is the most innovative and creative amongst the rest. It was in the morning that we manage to pay a visit to the SMK Tropicana team. Everything was still in setting up phase and the team was in panic and distraught because they were nervous on the outcome of their inventions.  We as a team manage to calm each other down and learned that stressing up won't us do much good. Having a cool head is the ticket to win this competition.

We weren't around to be with the SMK Tropicana team when they're invention was being assesed as we had class to attend . However, we eagerly wait the responses on how it went on Whatsapp. 4 Judges in total and it was scary to hear that one of them was our own Electrical Engineering Lecturer!

And not too long after, the results were in and at that moment, all of us knew all of our hard work paid of.  SMK Tropicana was placed second and it was amazing how all of our efforts bear fruit. Again, we didn't manage to be there during the ceremony but all of us congratulated the whole team for their winnings. Thank yous and goodbyes were exchanged and with that, our journey as mentors for Begin Challenge 2019 ended just like that. I went through a lot, interacting with them and able to see back how i was during secondary really opened my eyes , Life is a classroom.

In all  honesty, the first time the word "social engagement" crossed my mind, all i imagined it to be was a situation where you visit old folks' home/orphanages and things like that. However, as for my group, we had the chance to mentor a group of 4 high school students along with their school teacher for an innovation program called "BEGIN Challenge". This was totally different to the "social engagement" i had imagined in the first place. And i'm ecstatic to mention that this was certainly one of the greatest moments in my second year university life. BEGIN Challenge is a yearly innovation challenge organized by Tuanku Bahiyah Residential College and co-organized by Faculty of Engineering, UM. This challenge is all about innovating one's ideas and turning it into a working prototype. We are students from  Electrical Engineering department. For our Social Engagement course, we were given the opportunity to be a volunteer in the BEGIN Challenge. Every group was assigned to a school and my group was SMK Tropicana. I was placed in GROUP 14 together with another 10 members. Our task is to guide the students in completing their prototype which is SMART FENCING FOR ANIMAL DETECTION. Before:  We had a few meetings to discuss about the preparation for the workshop. We delegated jobs among the team members. 13.3.2019: Presentation Day Our group's presentation slot was on 15:00 at the block Y student clinic with Dr Chua. On my way to venue I was worried that I may not make it in time for the proposal presentation, and it was specially important to me to attend as I had no idea what my group was doing, as I didn't meet them before that. I get to the venue about 5 minutes late, but it seemed my group hadn't presented yet-that was a blessing. Student clinic was brimming with students, and there were two lecturers facing the projector screen towards the other end, evaluating another group's proposal. It was a shock to me that almost all the students that were suppose to be only observing, were speaking, and they were speaking quite loudly that it was necessary for one to focus hard on the presenter to understand them.
